Summary: "Endearing to both parent & baby"

DK's series of Touch & Feel books quality are slightly hit & miss, but this one is a home run.

Starting with construction, its a solid little book. The pages won't peel, the hairy patches won't get tugged out (I tried myself in the store), & the edges are blunted & the covers padded so they won't hurt baby. Size-wise, its just right for little hands to turn the pages. One complaint is the size of the textured patches - they are rather small. This is common for all touch & feel books I've seen, & its something I just don't understand. Babies & kids would rather be able to touch something larger than an inchworm! They are also repetitive, but this is a book about furry creatures - but something besides fur & holes would be nice.

Overall, the pictures really seem to pop off the page, are simple & eye-catching to baby, & cute for mom or dad. The text is simple & presents the concept of opposites, & invites discussion with baby about what's going on in the picture, (ex. "The kitten is laying down, because he's all tired out!") The textures make sense, for the most part (long hair patch versus short hair patch, shiny toy mouse, polka-dotted dalmatian) They are small, so young babies will likely need help 'petting' the animals, & older kids might be disappointed with only being able to drag a finger or two over them.

In depth - the cover features a puppy & kitten with soft, velvet-like ears & sparkle-y title text & spine. Its a nice touch, but I wonder how long it'll be before the velvet is grubby.

The first page is my five month son's favorite so far. It has a dog with a long hairy patch ('long-haired puppy' & 'ready to play!' says the text) on a red backround, & a black kitten with a short fur patch on a white backround ('tired out!' & 'short-haired kitten'). This page is extremely eye-catching even to very young babies, as their first visible colors are red, black & white. This was an excellent choice by DK! Also, the text & pictures are kept nice & simple, not distracting, yet feature the concepts of opposites perfectly.

The second page shows a dalmatian with very shallow holes for spots on a white backround ('woof! woof!' & 'spotted puppy'), & a orange kitten with a strip of fur on a blue backround ('purrrrrr' & 'striped kitten'). The opposites concept is murky here, as spots & stripes aren't really opposites, & 'purrrr' would be better off as 'meow'. This is a minor nitpick though.

Next is a kitten drinking from a dish with a shiny surface on a yellow backround ('slurp! slurp!' & 'thirsty kitten') & a puppy eating from a slightly raised bowl on a white backround ('yum! yum!' & 'hungry puppy'). This page is slightly disappointing, as neither is really a 'texture', & the bowl, like the previous spots will probably be overlooked by a kid. A mirror for water would of been better than a tiny shiny spot as well.

Fourth page is a dirty puppy with more shallow holes with sticky texture for paw prints on a white backround ('splatter! splat!' & 'dirty puppy') & a kitten licking itself with shiny stars over it, & tongue & whiskers on a pink backround ('lick! lick!' & 'clean kitten'. The concept of clean versus dirty is greatly illustrated here, simply, but the holes are boring, again, & easy to overlook since they're quite small. I only realized they were sticky when I glanced at the back cover which mentions 'sticky pawprints'! The shiny stars are distracting & not touchable. A pair of whiskers to flick would of been more interactive here.

Fifth page has a puppy on a blue backround with felt ears & chest ('furry ears!' & 'big puppy') & two kittens with the largest fur patch in the book on a white backround ('furry tails!' & 'little kittens'). The big/ little concept is a little muddled, as the two kittens are the same size as the puppy, even though the puppy looks like a Great Dane. The double use of the word 'furry' is misleading as well, since one patch is just felt & the other is quite long hair, which is only on one kitten.

The last page is a kitten batting a shiny mouse on a white backround ('meow!' & 'playful kitten') & three puppies with a furry patch on one ('big yawn!' 'zzzzzz' & sleepy puppies'). Revisiting tired versus playful seems a little lazy. I'd rather see happy/ sad, over/ under, cold/ warm, etc.

My final word is the book is worth it just for the first great contrasting page, as your young baby will likely stare at it for a good while, & enjoy 'petting' the two fur patches with your help. Later, they might enjoy flipping through on their own!

Summary: "texture galore"

This is my daughter's fav book! Every page has a tantalizing, textured animal. When she 1st discovered the sensation of rubbing the photographed animals' fur, she sweetly exclaimed very heavenly, "Ohhhhh, Ohhhhh, Ohhhhh!" 'Tis a fond memory I'll cherish forever, thanks be to this book. :) ~rhonda bridges

Summary: "Attention Holder"

I'm not sure that my baby really understands the concepts in this book. However, she loves touching the pictures in the book either by herself or when I'm reading to her. She is quite fasinated by it. The binding could be sturdier.

Summary: "Good first book for toddlers"

We purchased two of these touch and feel books for our 15 month old daughter. She loves the pictures and to feel the books. They are a great first book for older babies and young toddlers.

Summary: "Puppies And Kittens"

When I heard DK was putting out a touch and feel book about puppies and kittens, I had to order it immediately. My grandson simply can't get enough when it comes to his furry friends, long after they get a bit tired of his constant attention. I was actually hoping he'd fixate on petting these little creatures and leave the live ones to rest a bit.

This book was an instant hit. The cute little animals kept my grandson's attention and he loved feeling the different textures. By the way, the distraction worked. My grandson left the poor animals alone for quite a while. I however, wasn't so lucky. He kept bringing this book to me to read over and over again.
